As community resources for people with serious mental illnesses have shrunk in response to the ongoing economic crisis, the courts have been seeing more repeat offenders with untreated mental illnesses. Florida's jails and prisons are not designed, equipped, or funded to accommodate these offenders; the drug court model, however, offers a viable alternative. Like drug courts, mental health courts hold offenders accountable while connecting them to the treatment services they need to address their mental health issues.
